Guide to keep your central heating functioning during winter

Top tips that will go a long way toward keeping your central heating functioning during winter but remember, always get a qualified expert to check these items, never attempt it yourself.

1. Have the boiler serviced annually.

  • The most important thing you can do before autumn is have the boiler serviced by a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer.

2. Consult your boiler owners hand book.

  • It should tell you what you need to keep an eye on and how to make adjustments. Many manufacturers also have “how to” videos on the company web site or YouTube.

3. Check boiler pressure.

  • Boilers tend to lose water pressure gradually over time. Adjusting the pressure should not be a difficult task for the average home owner.
Caution: Rapid pressure loss such as having to top up every few days, should be checked by a suitably qualified person.

4. Check radiators for cool spots.

  • Cool spots on radiators, particularly near the top, usually indicate trapped air which needs to be bled.

5. Check for a frozen condensation pipe.

  • You can protect the external condensate pipe on your boiler by using pipe insulation.

6. Check for problem indicators.

  • If the flame is not strong and clear blue or if your boiler is leaking, cracking or making clunking noises or sooty marks, have it checked by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.
